IUI Cycle Update: Positive OPK After Clomid, Follistim & HCG

Question
Hello.  I did my first Clomid cycle (days 3-7) and followed up with a follistim shot on day 9.  U/S on day 11 showed one follicle at 23 so i was instructed to give myself a shot of HCG that night and come in the next morning (day 12) for my first IUI and day 13 for second IUI.  I had been taking Ovulation predictor tests from about day 5.  This morning (day 13) i finally had a positive surge on the OPK.  Considering that (I was told)  washed sperm only lasts about 12 hours, and that normally a person ovulates 24 hours after LH surge, were these IUIs too early?  Also, why didnt the HCG shot cause ovulation right away (i.e., within 12 hours)?

Answer
Hello,

The HCG shot usually doesn't work within 12 hours.  It sounds like they did the IUI according to the correct protocol, so I wouldn't worry that it was done too early.  Usually it is scheduled 36 hours after the HCG shot.  The home ovulation kits may be affected by the medications you were on.
