Clomiphene IUI Cycles: How Many Before IVF?

Dear Doctor,
I have just started on a new round of Clomiphene IUIs after 2 unsuccessful IUIs in a space of 2 years. Does this recent one count as No.3, or do they have to be performed on consecutive cycles for that? (Please note my 2 previous ones were done in Oct 2006 and Apr 2007 respectively. How many IUIs are recommended before moving on to IVF?

Hello Emilia,

This would be considered number 3 if you did not get pregnant from the others.  The maximum number of IUI's that is recommended is 4 because the pregnancy rates decrease significantly beyond that point.  However, age is usually a consideration.  If you are young (under the age of 35), some specialists will allow up to 6 tries.  I generally stick with the four.
