Post-Thrombotic Syndrome & Disability: Understanding Your Condition - Swissdoc

Question
Hi Swissdoc,
A few years ago, I had a Pulmonary Embolism first. Then 8 months later, I had DVT. I had a filter surgically implanted after that in my vena cava. Now I'm fine EXCEPT that my calf and ankle become swollen from time to time when I stand/sit for a long time, travel (especially driving), etc. I was told my condition is called post-thrombotic syndrome and it is a permanent disability. Do you consider it a permanent disability? It worries me becuase I'm afraid it will effect my job as I'm on my feet continuosly. Thanks

Answer
dear sir:
yes - this sounds like post-thrombotic syndrome with or without some failure your leg veins to adapt to long standing. you will have to learn to live with it:
- interrupting standing when possible and lying down
- walking along the aisles when flying
- interrupting driving every hour or so to take a few steps
- eventually wearing supporting stockings (your family doc should advise you whether this is helpful in your case.
i would call it more an annoyance than a disability since people can very well adapt to this frequent condition.
i would also advise to discuss with your gp whether you should be seen be a hematologist (specialist for blood and coagulation disorders) to rule out some acquired or inborn condition leading to PE's and DVT's.
best regards
