Irregular Periods: Causes & What to Expect After Age 39

Question
I am 39 years old.  For at least the last 15 years I have always been able to count 28 days between my menstral cycles.  However including my Sept. 5th cycle...I have had 4 periodsin 11 weeks.  I am now haivng periods every 21-23 days apart.  I cycled on Sept. 5th and then again on OCt. 1, and Oct. 26th and again Nov. 21.  Is there a reason my cycles are getting shorter btween?

Answer
Hi Maureen and thanks for writing,

There are several reasons your periods could be coming more frequently, some of which may require treatment. I suggest you go see your GP or Gynecologist and be examined by a professional.

I could list all the possible causes, but it's better to find out what is going on with your rather than worrying about all the possible causes (people always tend to pick the worst one and worry needlessly). Chances are you're just experiencing normal pre-menopausal hormone changes, but only by seeing a doctor will you know for sure.

I hope this helped, all the best,

Margot
