Post-Thrombotic Syndrome: Understanding Symptoms & Prognosis

Question
Hi Dr. Aukerman,

A few years ago, I had a Pulmonary Embolism first. Then 8 months later, I had  DVT. I had a filter surgically implanted after that in my vena cava. Now I'm fine EXCEPT that my calf and ankle become swollen from time to time when I stand/sit for a long time, travel (especially driving), etc. I was told my condition is called post-thrombotic syndrome and it is a permanent disability. Do you consider it a permanent disability? It worries me becuase I'm afraid it will effect my job as I'm on my feet continuosly. Thanks.

Answer
No, I do not consider it as usually disabling but I have my patients either on low dose anticoagulants, anti platelet agents(aspirin, pletal, plavix) or on high dose omega 3 fish oil to cut down on the clotting propensity.
If you are not on anyone of these ask your doctor if they would be OK for you.
OK?
