Understanding Type 2 Diabetes: When Results Seem Conflicting

Question
My husband was told he is type 2 diabetic 3-13-07, he went to the Dr. with leg pains, fatigue and hunger that does not end, they ran an HGB A1C, it came back 6.2, high, they also ran a Glucose, it came back 103, normal.  Yet the Dr. still said type 2 diabetic, that confuses us.
We have tested him at home off and on from that date, we have tested him in the morning, in the night, and everything in between, he is never high!
He is 38, 5'9 180 pounds, he eats, eats, and eats some more, says he is always hungry. He is thirsty a lot and tired, but these numbers just really throw us off!
Does this sound like diabetes to you?  We are confused because of the numbers on his blood test, they are never high.
Thanks.

P.S.  Both of his parents are type 2 diabetic, we really can not afford another opinion right now, we do not have INS and that Dr. visit was 200!

Answer
Hi Marie,
Based on the tests you've provided, he would technically have diabetes. His blood sugar should be tested about 2 hours after a meal and my guess is that his sugar will be elevated. The Hgb A1C is used to monitor the body's handling of sugar over a three month period.
His insatiable hunger and thirst is virtually diagnostic of diabtes.
He needs to be followed closely with this diagnosis and it may mean seeng a doctor despite the lack of insurance. His parents both being diabetics, almost makes it a slam dunk that he would be also.
