Post-Blood Donation Swelling & Pain: When to See a Doctor

Question
I am 18 yrs. old and gave blood for the 1st time 10 days ago.  My arm is still swollen, not red, and I can not straighten it out.  It also still hurts a lot.  Should I see a physician?

Answer
Hi Diane,

Yes. You should see your physician immediately. There may be a skin infection due to poor maintenance of the site after giving blood. Your forearm has tons of normal bacteria; however, in the event of an open wound - such as a puncture from a needle - it allows these bacteria to be opportunistic and infect the deep layers of the skin. Leaving this untreated may spread the infection elsewhere.

Please see your physician immediately or go to the ER.
