Understanding A- Blood Type and Antibody Status: What You Need to Know
QuestionHi I had a blood type test done and the nurse told me that I was A- and without antibodies, what does this mean and is it bad?
AnswerNo, that is not bad.... not having antibodies is very good, assuming you will have children in the future. The antibodies refer to the (-) part of the A- blood type.... some people who are A- or O- or AB- or B- develop antibodies against the protein that is present when your blood type is (+)... if that happens, then if you conceive and your unborn baby has (+) blood, then your antibodies (which you don't have) attack the baby's blood and causes a bad disease in the child. Sometimes when mom's have a child that is (+), there is mixing of blood at delivery, so you get a rhogam shot to prevent you from making those antibodies for the next pregnancy.
It gets complicated but... to answer your question... no antibodies is a good thing.....
