Prednisone & Blood Sugar: Understanding Post-Treatment Changes

Question
Hi,

Normally my fasting blood sugar is low 80's up until the beginning of this year.  In Feb I injured my shoulder and the orthopedist put me on prednisone, 10mg daily with a taper which took about 3 months.  My blood test, one month after stopping is now 104, fasting.  How long before it returns to normal, or won't it?  If it is that high one month after, how high could it have gone when I was using the prednisone?  Has this made me susceptible to diabetes?  My doctor did not even mention it when the blood test came in, guess he does not feel worried about it, but I am.  Thank you for your time.

Answer
prednisone can raise blood sugar while you are taking it but a few months after you stop, it should return to normal, unless you have changed other stuff... gained weight, changed diet, etc.  But all other things being equal, you should go back to normal, but being on prednisone for 3 months is a long time... it will take a few months to normalize.  Even so, a blood sugar of 104 is pretty good.   But I expect you will go back to where you were eventually, unless the prednisone caused you to gain some weight.
