Understanding Warfarin and Blood Count Levels: A Medical Explanation
QuestionMy Mum was supposed to have eye surgery today but because she is on waferin and her blood count was at 3.8 instead of the required 2.3 she wasn't able to have the surgery. What do these numbers mean? and should we be worried if the number spikes like this?
AnswerHi Sue,
Warfarin is a blood thinner used to prevent strokes etc and it is usually held for three days prior to surgery or dental work as thin blood bleeds more easily and takes longer to clot. The surgeons worry as thinner blood leads to an increased risk for higher blood loss during the procedure.
It's not a big concern, but anyone on any blood thinner should mnake sure to test their blood (Prothrombin Time) every 3-6 months to make sure they stay within the safe ranges.
Hope this helps and all the best,
Margot
