Understanding Elevated D-Dimer Levels and Calf Pain: A Patient's Experience

Question
I recently visited an ER because I had a sensation in my right calf that didn't feel normal.  I also had a slight headache which I reported to the ER doctor.  After testing, which included D-Dimer levels, CBC, CAT scan, Doppler study on my leg and a metabolic profile - everything was negative with the excpetion of the D-dimer profile which was elevated.  The doctor told me that D-dimer levels can be eleveated for any number of reasons and since I had been experiencing sneezing and allergy symptoms, he said that i probably have sinusitis.  He gave me an antibiotic for the sinusitis.  To be on the safe side, he gave me an injection of Levanox (blood thinner-not sure of spelling).  I left the ER and was told to follow up in a week with two other doctors - which I did not.  I have an appt next week with my primary care phys who is also an internist.  Also, the Doppler study of my leg revealed NO CLOTS - yet, I am still experiencing this unusual sensation (slightly, very slightly painful) in my upper calf...Any ideas? Thanks

Answer
Yes, with elevated D-dimer, you most likely have a clot but not in the larger more dangerous veins, but can develop into one by extension from small vein to large vein so call your doctor to see if you need at least aspirin and TED hose until you see them
