QuestionBackground: Our son is 14 months old. When he was 6wks, he was diagnosed with acid reflux and put on Prevacid for 8 months. Since Sept. 5, he has been congested with a runny nose. He has coughing fits whenever he drinks something (it doesn't matter what he drinks or if he uses a cup or bottle). He also grabs the skin on his neck and pulls it when he is trying to soothe himself to sleep. (He has been doing this for the past 3 months.) He has also been on antibiotics twice in these past 6 weeks for sinus and ear infections.
Here come the questions: Could his symptoms also be from a return of the acid reflux? Also, what else should we be looking for? What else could be going on with him?
His pediatrician says that the coughing fits are from being congested. We're not so sure. We want to take him to see another doctor. We just don't know if it should be a gastroenterologist, some other specialist or another pediatrician.
Thank you for taking the time to answer these questions. We appreciate any help or insight you can give us.
Sincerely,
Max's mom and dad
Answerthat is a tough question without witnessing the events... this could be reflux, could be a learned response to whatever external stimuli.... I would start with the pediatrician and ask for a GI peds referral if they can't come up with a good explanation......
