Acrylic Nails & Thin Nails: Troubleshooting Lifting & Nail Health

Question
Karen:  I am new to Acrylic Nails and have had them for 3 months.  I have had to take them off several times for they continue to lift on the sides after 1 1/2 weeks of wear.  I would like to wear Acrylic Nails again for an upcoming event, but I fear my nails are too thin.  How do you know if your nails are too thin to put them on again AND why are they lifting?  I have done the manicure myself from a "complete" kit.  Thanks for your quick response.

Answer
Hi Jill Ann,
I have to tell you,I can not give you a yes or no answer to your question. I will try to give you some possible answers to your question and advise. I understand that you are doing your own acrylic services and you are having lifting issues on the sidewalls of the nail. Lifting can come from a variety of things, improper technique is the most common, liquid powder ratio can be another, to thin of product on the side walls, the acrylic touching the skin. As to whether your nails are to thin or not, again I can not tell you an answer because I can not see your nails( if your nails are hurting then they are to thin), thinning should not occur to your natural nails when wearing acrylics, my best guess since you are doing them yourself would be when they are lifting they are pulling parts of you natural nail or it could be over filing of the natural nail. If you would like to wear acrylics for a special occasion I would highly advise you to seek a professional to apply them and work with you to get your nails in shape.
After 16 years of doing nails professionally I can never advise someone to do enhancements with out some kind of training, you are working with chemicals and sometimes permanent damage can be done to the nail with out knowing it at the time. Again I am sorry that I can't give you a direct yes or no answer without knowing exactly what is happening without seeing them.
Thank you for you question.
Karen
