Safe Gel & Acrylic Nail Removal: A Professional Guide

Question
How can I remove my gel/arcrylic nails safely?  I heard something about soaking them, but do not know what to soak them in.

Answer
Dear Michelle,

The best way to remove them safely is to have a professional do it.
Do NOT pick them off, or you'll damage your natural nails.
If you are wearing 'True' UV Gels, they must be removed by a professional only.
If you are wearing acrylic, you should be able to soak them off in acetone within 20min.

HOWEVER, if they are cheap toxic acrylic containing MMA, the soaking can take as long as 2hrs.
Also, UV Gel will not soak off in acetone either in most cases. There are a few brands (2 or 3) that will soak off in acetone, but they are not as popular as the non-soakables.

I would need to know specifically HOW your nails were applied to be able to better answer this question.

- Was liquid and powder used?
- Were your natural nails filed with an electric file aka drill?
- Was a gel-like substance used similar in viscosity to hair gel, and then the hands put under a uv lamp?
- Do you know what brand of product was used?

Please see these pages for more information, so you'll know better what was actuallly applied, and then I can help you better.
