Oxidizing White Gold Jewelry: A Guide & Repair Options

Question
I have a piece of white gold and diamond jewelry. the jump ring broke and I took it to a local jeweler for repair. This piece was done by a jeweler, Devon Page McCleary, she was famous for making her work have a patina. They cleaned the piece, and now it's shiny. How can I oxide the white gold, or who should I send it to?

Answer
You might have some difficulty matching it exactly unless you knew what Devon used, sometimes designers are very secretive about those type of things. but any good jeweler should be able to gradually oxidize it to match if you have the color you want to go by... that is if it is somewhere else on the same or another similar composite piece. It also may depend upon the exact karat and composition of alloy which can effect the rate and color of the patina. I once had to silver plate a bar to match a piece found on a Spanish galleon to match the original and it took several attempts and layers to get just the right shade to remain. we used liver of surfer  which also works on white gold but not near as quickly and also sulfuric acid but these chemicals are very smelly as well as acidic and can burn your hands eyes and clothes. please only use them with proper protective wear and supervision. Several manufactures also make tarnishing solutions depending on the colors you desire. Rio Grande sells some of them but the shipping may be expensive because of their haz mat classification.. Again it depends on the color you need as to the chemical you use.
and the amount of it.  You might even achieve it with a sand blast or bead blast.
Without the exact color it isn't easy to advise you what to use.
I do hope this helps.
