QuestionI recently purchased a 1980 phillies championship replica ring....ring is not real...I would like ring to be shinier...is it possible to out an inexpensive plating on this ring?
AnswerAlex, you appear to live about 5 hours away from me, to the East of my location. That is not 5 hours travel time but in time zones! Yet, you have a Phillies ring! I wonder where you are. : )
If the ring is costume jewelry, the only way to know if a plate may be added is to have a jeweler look at the ring, first hand.
Generally, a plate will not make a ring shinier. The plate will only show the surface texture the metal has originally. In other words, a satin finish will look satin after plating, even if a different color. If shiny to start, the plate properly done will be shiny. The plate follows the contours and surface texture already on the item.
A jeweler may be able to tell you if the ring is capable of taking a polish to produce a shiny surface. At that point, if the ring is of the right metal, perhaps a brass alloy, a plate may be placed on the ring.
I do hope this answer will help in some way. If you need more information, do not hesitate to get back to me. You may use the "follow-up" with the answer you receive to get back.
