Selling an Engagement Ring: Reputable Buyers & Value Estimates in NYC

Question
I have been given a few prices from diamond/jewelry buyers for the resale of my engagement ring.  I have little knowledge as to market and resale values.  I have the description of the stone on the certificate but that doesn't mean much to me.   Where can I go to sell the ring, or just the diamond.  Can you recommend reputable buyers in the New York area? Also, where can I find approximate value information so that I know a little more when a buyer states his price?

Answer
I generaly recommend you don't sell to a professional jewelry buyer.
You need to have a full appraisal of the ring in order to sell it for it's best price.
I also recommend after the ring is appraised that you list it so as to sell it to the consumer. Not a jeweler or buyer. That is what these people do and make most of the money in the transaction.
There are many appraisers in the New York City Area including myself. If you need an appraiser I'm happy to recommend one. In addition to appraising a good appraiser can walk you through the selling process and give you some good tips.
Let me know if I can help you further.
