Green Beryl Engagement Ring: Is It a Good Choice?

Question

green beryl
Recently I went to a arts and crafts festival. While there my girlfriend and I fell in love with this 4ct green beryl ring with 4 diamonds on both sides. It wasn't completely green--it had more of a tint to it. It was beautiful. Well she convinced me that she wanted it to be her engagement ring. It was $4200. But boy was it pretty. I wanted to know more on this gem and if I should go with a traditional diamond. She is the type of person who loves to be different and bold. Is it ok to get this ring as an engagement ring? Answer
Dear Faudner,

My wife has an oval rubellite tourmaline as the main stone in her engagement ring.  The stone is not at red as some but is quite lovely and she really loves it. After 25 years I believe the "different" stone engagement ring has done quite well.   Where I used to work, sure, diamonds were the most common sellers for engagements but we did sell a number of different stones.  While sapphire and ruby were likely second in choices, several of the other colored gemstones have been made up into engagement rings and in those cases I see a bride-to-be with a smile of joy! You see, as I feel it, it is not the stone but the love and what makes you two happy.  Some folks may want to know why she chose the beryl and the answer is simply, "I love it".

To follow your own direction in this choice is a fine thing.  Who makes the rules? In this most important ring choice, the person who is going to be married has that choice and if you both like the idea what can I say but go for it!

Be sure the ring is one which can be sized if that should be needed some years down the road, smaller or larger perhaps.  Be sure it is comfortable enough in that wide style to wear for a long time and still be comfortable.  These are just practical considerations to be considered no matter what the main stone might be.

Green beryl is a nice gemstone.  I have always liked it.  There is not a rule saying what stone is "required" for an engagement ring but you do need to consider the suitability of the stone. For instance, you would not want a very lovely but very soft or fragile stone.  Green beryl is a mint green variety of beryl, a mineral giving us pink morganite, yellow heliodor beryl, blue aquamarine and green emerald (the least durable beryl because of internal flaws).  The stone is certainly durable enough, not as tough as a diamond and no other stones are tough as diamonds. But green beryl is somewhere between amethyst and topaz in hardness and is actually tougher than topaz even if topaz is ever so slightly harder. You know people wear topaz and amethyst and aquamarine stone and the stones do very well in jewelry. Green beryl will do just as well as those other stones.

Faudner, there you have it. I if she likes that gem, then that is the gem. Thanks for the fine photo. A photo always helps bunches.

If you have any further questions on this subject feel free to use the follow-up option to get back with me. Also,if you get a chance and want to do it, please rate the answer so I will know how I am doing on the questioners side of allexperts. Fair enough?

God Bless and Peace.   Thomas.
