Removing Hallmarks from an Antique Diamond Ring: Value & Options

Question
Hi there, I recently proposed to my girlfriend with a 1920's antique diamond ring- it was a little too large and we have had it adjusted- when we got it back the jewelers have taken the piece contianing the hallmarks out- i would like to know if this is going to affect the value of the ring and what i can do from here? I hope you can help.

Answer
Hello Adam and thank you for your inquiry. It's unfortunate that the hallmarks were removed. It wouldn't adversely affect the gold or diamond value of the ring but if the ring were marked say "Tiffany & Co" or some other prominent jewelry company, that would make a difference on any resale value. When you purchased the ring, by chance would your receipt have the company name written on it ? Also check with the jeweler and ask if he might have written the name down on a work order. If not, there's not much you can do unless you remember part of the hallmark. If I think if any other options, I'll let you know but don't let this spoil your wonderful moment !
Congratulations !
