Identifying Your Heirloom Ring: 18ct White Gold or Platinum?

Question
Hi, I have been given an heirloom in shape of a engaement ring. It could be white gold or plaitnum? it has just one marking which states 18ct. It is of plain design with a square mount but diamond looks circular. I would like to know how old it is so i can determine who it belonged to! Any help would be appreciated.
Janice

Answer
G'day Janice and many thanks for your query.

Firstly if the ring is stamped 18ct - it can't be platinum. The UK British Hallmarks and many European countries have excellent Hallmarks which enable us to identify not only when it was made - but where it was made also.

However in the States - the marks are weak without any way to tell where or when.

White gold was very popular during the Art Deco Period (1920's - 1940's) and again in the 1980's

You are going to have to talk with your family and friends to try and pin down an approximate age - as on this mark alone - that is impossible.

The square mount is also Art Deco in design - but there are many reproductions on the market.

A Photo might have helped - but remember we can't see, feel, measure or test it.

You might also like to add this query to my Jewelry Forum at http://www.online-jewelry-appraisals.net/jewelry-forum/ as other may have had a similar problem.

Can't hurt anyway and who knows what answers you may get.

Hope this helps...
