Question
Dweck bracelet
Do you think this bracelet (see photo) can be made smaller by removing a link? It is rock crystal and sterling silver, the silver links are engraved.
AnswerCathryn, yes a link may be removed but the question is "how" it is done. The most simple method is to cut the double links to remove the engraved silver link next to the toggle bar then reattach the toggle bar with its jump rings (loops of metal) to the double links. If the double links are heavy, soldering should not be needed for strength.
If the links are not strong, then the engraved link should be carefully cut and removed so the double links stay intact. Then the toggle bar end can be attached to the double links and the loop soldered. There is just enough room with the double links and the link on the end of the toggle bar loops to make soldering safe and protect the crystal from the heat.
The engraved link can be repaired where cleanly cut and even perhaps be used for a pendant with a pendant loop attached to it. (Either the double links or the engraved link will need to be cut to remove.)
This is a lovely bracelet.
I know removing the toggle ends will change the look of the bracelet. However, you might consider another sort of clasp. Why? Removing the toggle bar end and loops and the toggle loop at the other end will shorten the bracelet considerably. Another clasp would be something like a lobster claw clasp.
If you are sure one link will do it, my first suggestion would be the removal of the engraved silver link as mentioned above (cutting the silver link). I prefer this method since it better preserves the look of the bracelet. From seeing the picture, I believe a good jeweler who will work on sterling should be able to do the job without needing to remove and reset the crystal stone.
Best wishes. Check around and get some idea of how the jewelers respond to the idea and that will help you make a decision on which jeweler to use if you decide to do so.
Thanks so much for the good photo. Without that, answering the question would be almost impossible and in very, very general terms.
