QuestionI am 40 years old, diagnosed with a blighted ovum, my first day of my last period was Oct. 12th. It is Dec. 9 this morning and a week ago I had a D&C, I had gone to the Dr. last wed. Nov. 30th they saw a misshappen sac, called me in that thurs the next day to tell me my HCG levels were very high, they gave me a vaginal ultrasound and told me they could find absolutely nothing. They scheduled me for the D&C the following day Friday, the 2nd of Dec. I had mild cramping no big deal even less than my normal period cramps. Then on Saturday in the wee hours heading to Sunday, I started getting cramps, took some midols, in the morning I still had the cramps straight thru the evening they were getting worse, at this point no bleeding just increased cramping. At the hospital they did an ultrasound the on top of the abdomin one, the pain after the procedure was excruciating, they offered me morphine I declined, they gave me percocette sp? They drew blood, check the D&C pathology told me it was interuterine, and that they had no idea what the problem was. So from Sunday nite to tuesday morning I was in the hospital with antibiotics in the IV, had no fever, had no bleeding just the rotten cramps. Tuesday morning one of the doctors comes in says he had no idea what was wrong with me, did I want to go home, feeling somewhat better and discouraged they could find no reason for this, I said I would go home. he woke me up and I felt better so I thought as soon as I started moving around to get things together the cramps started again like gangbusters. He left me no pain meds, in a wheelchair because I couldn't walk I went to office. Nearly passed out from cramps on way home, bumps on the road were driving me nuts, someone else was driving. Next day go to Dr. where the female Dr. who performed the procedure did an internal, again I started to feel better just some muscle tightness that made me hunch over a bit but the cramps were no big deal. 15 mins after the internal, I was doubled over in such pain, called Dr.'s office where a nurse told me, that is normal. Next day Thursday again wake up feeling much better, an hour later the cramps come and some bleeding, called Dr.'s office get nurse who tells me unless bleeding very hard its probably just my period starting, this less than a week from procedure. Well I had the cramps, used 2 pads, now bleeding is tapering off again its the middle of the nite and again wake up in such pain that I would of liked to had been knocked out totally, and last nite I realized that my left foot and leg are very swollen that I can't even put my shoes/sneakers on. I don't know what the heck to do, please advise me. I have 2 daughters ages 20 and 19. I am taking an antibiotic and percosette for pain.
AnswerA diagnosis was never made for your pain and bleeding. If you are still having such pain and now have edema of yourleft foot and leg, you should go back to the ER and have an entire evaluation. Repeat the sonogram looking for evidence of an ectopic (tubal) pregnancy. That can cause the same symptoms. Even though the D&C specimen claimed that it was intrauterine, it can be both intrauterine and ectopic. If the sonogram is, in any way, suspicious, you may need a laparoscopic examination to rule out pelvic pathology. In the least, you should be given pain medication. If you are not satisfied with your doctors or if no satisfaction is reached, I would suggest going for a second opinion to another gynecologist.
