Question I was wondering if you could tell me is it common to find a diamond with foil on the back of it? Or what about airholes do real stones always have one. I have seen some older jewlery looks like real diamonds just no air holes, or maybe they have foil. JUst one more thing was diamonds ever used in diamond rings
thanks for your time Constance
AnswerCJ, diamonds never have foil backs. Foil backs are little mirrors applied to the back of glass imitation stones called rhinestones. Some rhinestones have foil backs and some do not. Generally, the rhinestones in closed back settings are foil backs.
You cannot guess the stone by the back being open or closed. Diamonds are sometimes set with closed backs in the settings and still sparkle just fine. The diamond has enough light bending ability to sparkle with the back covered. It is better to have an open back with a diamond so the stone can be cleaned properly.
With foil backed rhinestones, the back is generally closed to protect the back and because some costume jewelry is easier to make that way.
Thanks for the question. Now you know about foil backed stones.
