Decoding Gold Ring Hallmarks: A Guide to Identifying Origins & Value
Question
Bone like symbol
I have recently recieved a gold ring which used to belong to my great great great great great grandmother it is at least 100 years old. So what i would like to know is what the hallmarks mean. i will try my best to describe them.
There is a W and E in seperate squares, a crown, an anchor (which i know is the birmingham assay office mark), what looks to be like a bone mark (image attached), And a mark which has been damaged but i think looks like a tree or a wheat sheaf. I hope you can help me identify these hallmarks and i will be very thankful for an information you can give me.
Thank-you
AnswerHello James and thank you for your inquiry. It is difficult to visualize hallmarks even with extensive description. Your item does sound like Birmingham. I have not been able to locate anything, but you may have better luck since you have a visual. There is a book - Jackson's Hallmarks, that has extensive English marks as well as other European. It is a small book and you should be able to get it at your local library or bookstore. Amazon.com online usually has it in stock. You might also check the below hallmark site for ideas. Just copy and paste the below url into your browser address field and hit enter.

Sometimes if you can only match up 2 or 3 features in a hallmark it will lead you to your mark. Hope this helps and good luck !
