QuestionHi,
I recently bought a ring via E-Bay which has several hallmarks on it. The first is the number 62, which is not in any box. The second is SMO or SMG in a square and the third is what appears to be a M followed by a star, followed by the numbers 875. I have found that 875 is a hallmark for 21 carat arabic gold, however I do not think this is the case as it appears to be faded. Could the M and star mean it is gold plated?
I would be very grateful if you could share any knowledge you have about these hallmarks, as I can't seem to find much about them.
Many Thanks,
Heather
AnswerG'day Heather and many thanks for your query
None of these marks mean anything to me either as the numbers and letters may simply be a Makers Mark or design number.
You need to take it to your local jewelry store and have them test it to be certain of the gold quality. At least they will be able to say if it is plated or not.
Sorry I can't be of any help.
