Understanding Jewelry Hallmarks: What Does 'S14K' Mean?

The brooch is marked S14K it's looks like white gold...can you tell me what the S stands for?

Hi Susan,

I am not an expert in hallmarks or makers marks.  It is possible that the "S" is the makers mark, but without seeing it, I can't even make an educated guess.  There is a wholesale manufacturer that stamps their settings and jewelry with an "S", but it is more of scroll "S" and I usually see it appearing after the 14k.  There are other possibilities, but again, without seeing it myself I don't really have a place to start looking.
