Identifying Antique Butterfly Brooches: Help with Maker's Mark

Question

brooch mark
I have a brooch that my grandmother gave me.  I'm trying to find out who made it and I cannot read the mark on the back.  It is a name followed by the numbers846.  I have searched everywhere but cannot find anything that resembles it.  Could you please try to see if you recognize it or tell me if it is worth my time to find out.  I don't even know if it is real gems or not.  If you need another picture just let me know.  Thank you so much.

Answer
Hello Jessica and thank you for your inquiry. Your brooch appears to be a butterfly and I imagine that it has rhinestones. Just from the part of the name that I could see - possibly Jomaz ? The 846 may just be a design or line number. If you believe it is gold or sterling you might want to have a jeweler look at it and test for precious materials. It's better to be sure than sorry....Another thing to consider - was this your grandmother's brooch or a new one given as a gift ? That would help with the era/age and perhaps narrow down the designers. There are a lot of jewelry books on the market with designer marks pictured - your library or local bookstore would be a good source as is amazon.com online.

Hope this helps and good luck !
