1925 Diamond Brooch Appraisal & History - Montgomery, AL

Question
Hi, We have a brooch that was custom made for my wife's grandmother in about 1925. She lived in Montgomery, Alabama. It is marked <D-M> and it appears to be at least 20 karat gold. It is set with six 1/2 karat and one 3/4 karat diamonds that look to be very good. The diamonds are surrounded with black stones (onyx?). The clasp is intricate, so it may be that this is one of those brooches that was also part of a necklace. Any ideas?

Answer
Hello Gary and thank you for your inquiry. Your brooch sounds beautiful but in order to get a positive description/valuation, you would need to take it to an estate jewelry appraiser for stone identification and gold determination. I think this piece would need a hands-on inspection by a professional so that you have a value for personal and insurance information. There are good online appraisers who will work from photographs, but I would recommend a local appraiser perhaps one recommended by a local museum or estate banking institution.  Hope this helps and enjoy your brooch !
