Celtic Ring Identification & Valuation: Understanding Hallmarks & Gemstones

Question
Hello there for over twenty years I have had a very pretty
celtic style ring with alternating one red stone followed
by one clear stone set around it. It is marked with sil and
either the number 16 or 91 on the inside of the ring. I
would love to know what this type of hallmark means and how
I should go about getting it valued as I would think that
the stones are ruby and diamond but obviously cant assume
that as yet. I look forward to hearing from you with any
info or advice available, many thanks and best wishes,
Hayley.

Answer
Hello Hayley and thank you for your inquiry. Your ring sounds lovely. Without actually viewing the ring or more marking information, it is difficult to give you much information. The numbers inside are probably design or manufacturer information. If you believe that the ring is gold or sterling and the stones may be genuine, you should take it to an estate jewelry appraiser or professional for evaluation. These numbers may mean something more to them. If it is an older ring, it may not be marked as to metal content - the "sil" would indicate some grade of silver but not necessarily sterling which is 925. Your local museum or antique shop may be able to refer you to someone who could test the ring for you.

Hope this helps and enjoy your ring !
