Identify Antique Jewelry: Decoding Hallmark & Origins

Question
I recently was given a lovely ring and bracelet set and am trying to identify
the age/origin.  I haven't been able to find the mark in any guides.  It appears
to be the letter "A", a left-facing long-nosed dog or fox and then the number
4 (or the letter "H") inside a five-sided mark.  A separate "A" appears to the
right of this mark.  Both pieces feature mine-cut diamonds and what I would
guess to be french-cut rubies in what looks to be a mix of platinum and 18K
gold. Thanks in advance for your help!

Answer
Hello Lori and thank you for your inquiry. This sounds like a nice set and the markings are complicated. Here is a site that you may want to browse for similar markings:

Since these are diamonds and probably precious metals, you should have the set appraised by an estate jewelry appraiser. That way you will have all the information should you decide to sell or pass the set on as an heirloom. You can check with your local antique shop or museum for referral to a good appraiser. Sorry I couldn't be of more assistance on this and good luck. Enjoy it !
