QuestionMy mother's eternity ring has recently been passed to me. It has three small diamonds in the white setting and 9ct Plat printed on the inside of the band (which is yellow), I can't see any other hallmark/s. Could you tell me what this mark means.
AnswerHi, Norma. I will attempt an answer but too many parts are missing to be able to be very accurate with certainty without testing the ring metals.
As I understand it, jewelry items made in the UK must be tested and marked by one of the assay houses. Then, the item will carry the full group of hallmarks including maker, metal quality and assay house. A date letter may or may not be present. For your ring to have a 9ct Plat and no other marks seems unusual to me. The mark is quite like those used in the USA except the makers mark is not there and 9ct is not a legal mark in the USA.
Here, in the USA, I would read the mark to mean the ring is made of 9 karat gold (carat in the UK) and the white setting for the diamonds is platinum. Jewelry with two different precious metals show a mark for each.
Without the ring in hand, I cannot say more. For you to know accurately, the metal would need to be tested by a jeweler. Many jewelers will not test metals so if you wish to have this done, you would need to call first to avoid a wasted drive. If this ring was mine, I would likely leave as is and enjoy it without the test.
Thanks and I do hope this answer helps. God Bless and Peace. Thomas.
