QuestionI have a garnet ring that is marked with CIC or CID 10 K. I know the 10K but never seen CIC. I can speculate- but would rather differ to you. Also is there a good site for which I can find what most of these marks mean? I do have a bit of family jewelry, and sadly to say no one to tell me about it for sure. Many quality pieces just shine in there own right and can not be denied. It is the quite more subtle of the pieces that have proven of high value. Unfortunately I no longer have anyone who would know about the care of these pieces, cleaning storage, etc. I have many questions to come and would hate to waste your very valuable time, expertise and kindness.
Thank you
Kate
AnswerDear Kate, I truly wish I could give you a source for and easy answer. Unfortunately, that is not readily available.
What you are dealing with in this ring with the CIC(D?) is manufacturers marks. In keeping with the federal regulations the makers mark must be associated with the quality mark, the 10k. The problem is finding which maker out of thousands is using those initials as a mark. It gets worse when a symbol and not initials are used.
Most of the experts on allexperts do not attempt to identify makers marks. I do not since unless I just happen fortunately to recognize the mark attempts to run it down are like chasing a rabbit down its trail to suddenly realize the rabbit is gone and the trail is lost.
Sorry, I cannot help with that identification. If you need appraisals, knowing the maker is nice but is not necessary to establish a value. If you choose to have appraisals done on any of the items, please choose an appraiser with recognized credentials. Being a jeweler alone does not quality a person to write accurate appraisals.
In the future if you have questions on the other concerns mentioned, please do not hesitate to ask. Fair enough?
God Bless and Peace. Thomas.
