Decoding Jewelry Markings: What Does 'EJ' Mean on a 10K Gold Ring?

Question
Hello, I have a waterfall type diamond cluster ring and on the band inside reads ' 10 K E J '. what does the 'EJ' mean. Thanks so much.

Answer
Hi, Dody.  The EJ is most likely the maker's mark, showing the mark of the manufacturer.  If in the USA, this is the legal form for marking jewelry, with a metal quality stamp such as 10k and then the maker's mark.  This is legally like the maker signing a check, essentially saying the check is good. With jewelry, the idea is that the maker is "signing" the jewelry to state that the gold is as marked.

Without the ring in my hands, there is not a real way for me to validate the karat of the gold.  If there is any concern about that, a jeweler who does gold testing can do that for you.  If the ring came from a reputable source, I would not be concerned about testing the metal. The EJ has nothing to do with the quality of the metal.

I hope this helps.    God Bless and Peace.  Thomas.
