Identifying Vintage Jewelry: Expansion Bracelet & Belt Ring - Expert Analysis

Question
I saw a expantion bracelet on the question page. I have one that looks like it but mine is marked where there's was not. It is gold in color & marked D.F.B.C.O patented bracelet 06. It opens up to place a picture. Can you tell me more? I also have a ring that a lady tried to buy from me many times. She said it is an original belt ring from the 1800's. She said the sides beside the buckle is indented so they could place their childs hair in them. I did not ask what she would give as not interested in selling but have searched many years to find out more about this ring. It is marked 10ct. To the left of that there is another marking but can't make it out. I would love to learn more of the history of this ring.

Answer
Hello Barbara and thank you for your inquiry. The D.F.B. Co. - D. F. Briggs Co. was located in Attleboro, Mass. These were popular in the late 1800's through the 1920's. Most of them had adjustable bands and locket fronts with places for monograms, stones or designs. Another popular brand was the Carmen Bracelet also made by the same company. It was named after the opera Carmen which had opened in Paris in 1875. Usually these bracelets depending on the condition and design, sell for around $100.00.

Now the ring is a different thing. The 10ct means that it is 10K gold and the other marking is probably the maker or design #. Vintage belt rings were popular in the mid 1800's and some were set with gemstones. Valuation would have to be determined by confirming the weight in grams, daily market price for gold, condition of ring and make if it can be determined. You might want to have it appraised by an estate jewelry appraiser who can possibly use magnification and other means to decipher the entire mark for you.

You might also use your browser and search for "antique belt ring" for pictures of similar items for comparison.

Hope this helps and enjoy your jewelry !
