Authenticating Osvaldo Guayasamin Jewelry: Is It Genuine?

Question

Guayasamin Pendent
Hello,
I have pendent that has Guayasamin inscribed on the back.  I think it's by the Ecuadorian artist, Osvaldo Guayasamin who was known to have made jewelry. I've read that his paintings are widely faked.  I was curious if the same is true of his jewelry?  The emeralds are full cut, and of good quality.  It's made of silver, with a "gold wash" in the body.  Any assistance or direction would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance,
Fred

Answer
Hello Fred and thank you for your inquiry. I am not familiar with this artist but the pendant is lovely.  I would suggest that you have it authenticated either by a jewelry appraiser or perhaps a gallery that specializes in his work might be able to give you some information on whether the jewelry is being reproduced. Many local museums also provide appraisal services periodically. Your photograph is good enough that someone more familiar with this type of jewelry may be able to give you more information. Below is a number for the Quito tourism board and they may be able to offer the name of someone specializing in the jewelry or a contact at the museum there.

By telephone, you can contact the Quito Visitor's Bureau in the following numbers:

+593 2 299 3300 to 3330
Fax: +593 2 295 9510

Hope this helps and enjoy the beautiful pendant !
