Engagement Ring Issues: Is My Ring Deforming?

Question
My fiance gave me an engagement ring 5 months ago and i never take it off. the band is labled "14k" and theres a bigger diamond in the middle with a smaller one on either side. when he first gave it to me i noticed the set of stones were off center even though the band was supposed to be a complete circle well 3 days ago i felt the ring getting tighter round my finger i thought maybe my fingers were getting fatter lol but i could still rotate the ring a little a day later it starts to hurt and i can no longer rotate the ring i look at the back of the ring and its completely bent inward and deformed around my finger i managed to get it off but a "diamond " pops out, and i can bend the ring using very little pressure with my fingers. my fiance paid quite a bit for this ring and he's furious. I just would like to know if you think the ring is fake and whether 14k gold can be bent that easily

Answer
Kelly, first of all the ring needs to be brought to the attention of the place or person who sold the ring in the first place. And, I can certainly understand why your fiance is upset.

Yes, gold of any karat can bend as can other metals. Bending does not mean it is fake. (A fake would likely be brass in the first place and harder to bend than gold!) How easily a piece of gold bends depends on the hardness of the metal and the thickness.  A very thin section will bend quite easily. A thicker piece which is in a softer form will bend easier than a harder piece the same thickness.

Kelly, can you think about what you do with your hand each day?  There has to be something the ring is contacting to cause the bend. Sure, the metal should not bend so easily but it has.  A car steering wheel can do it over time as can a firm grip on a door latch, etc.  These little things can bend soft metal when done over and over.

Really, the seller should consider who is responsible for this bent ring, even if the truth of the matter may be difficult to establish.

Best wishes and God Bless.      Thomas.
