Identifying Vintage Mother of Pearl Pendant: History & Value

Question

pendant
I purchased this at a flea market for $17. Can you tell me anything about it? it is about 3 inches long and 2 inches wide.

Thanks
Jennifer

Answer
Jennifer, I know little about your mother of pearl carving except that it is likely from close to 1950 if the box is correct. Formosa was soon to be known as Taiwan following the initial Chinese takeover from Japan after the second world war and the seizure again following the loss by Chiang Kai-shek to the Chinese communists and Mao.  The carving is neatly done and fairly typical of such items from Taiwan (Formosa).

I cannot say how you did in price because as a jewelry maker such valuations are out of my area of knowledge.  I wonder how the back is made?  Some have cemented mother or pearl loops and other items have metal hangers.  In either case, it would be wise to have a jeweler check all for security.  Since mother of pearl is the same material as pearls (nacre), it should be kept in the box or otherwise stored where it will not contact and rub other jewelry items.  General cleaning may be done with mild dish detergent (not soap), rinses well and patted dry.

I hope this answer will help in some little bit.

God Bless and Peace.  Thomas.
