Pearl Earring Repair: Where to Go & Estimated Costs

Question
I have a pearl earring that was inset in silver and diamonds. There was only one pearl and it just broke off. Who do I take it to (a major resail like JC Penny?) and how much will it take me to repair the earring?

Answer
Krystal, generally department store jewelry departments do not have repair services at the store. Items must be sent to a service shop the business employs.  For a pearl replacement that might be a long wait for a fairly basic repair.

First, did the pearl have a hole drilled in the back so it would be cemented to a peg on the earring?  If the pearl came off the post that means only getting a matching pearl and cementing it in place.  However, if the post is broken off and is in the pearl, I suggest you take the earring to where it was purchased (if within the last year) and see if they will replace the earring.

If the pearl was cemented directly to the earring and came off, it may also be replaced.

Take your earring to a jewelry store, not a department store jewelry department. Call and ask if the store has a bench jeweler.  The bench jeweler is the person who actually does the repairs. If there is bench jeweler there, your repair will be done at the store.  Go there and ask about having your earring pearl replaced.  Unless the earring is damaged in some way, replacement of the pearl should be relatively simple and will cost little more than the cost of the pearl. How much? I do not know since pearls vary greatly in price depending on size and quality.

Best wishes. God Bless and Peace.        Thomas.
