Financial Responsibility & Marriage: Should a Boyfriend Pay Off Debt?

Hi Kiya,

I have a question.  I'm helping a female friend of mine to find an answer.  Should her boy friend pay off her debt to ask for marriage ?  Is this ethical ?  This guy have been sleeping with a girl before (not sure if they made love).  This guy now is so afraid to loose my female friend and he is offering to pay off all her debt to propose for marriage.  He even cried in front of her when she tried to pay back all the money he loaned her before.  He is so afraid he will loose my friend.  Please advise, should my friend marry this guy?  Thank you very much.

A marriage should never consist of anything else other than true eternal love and a meaningful relationship that two people will cherish and enjoy full of values and morals. This means that they will never have to worry about the other one being dishonest, disrespectful or hurtful. In a marriage, you know that it is right when you have the feeling that it is too good to be true. You will have not a doubt in your mind that this person is the one for you and you will be together forever. If your friend wants to become married to her boyfriend, than she should wait at least 3 years to see if he will do this type of behavior again. Many men that do this, will usually never stop. In my opinion, she should date other people and let this boyfriend go. Although she may need to have closure and make sure for herself that he may not be worth her standards.
