Postpartum Back Pain After Epidural: Causes, Relief & When to See a Doctor

Question
I gave birth about 5 monts ago. Had an epadurial(spelling is probably not correct) and ever since the delivery I have been experiencing some severe back pain. I call them "spazums". Is this normal to have back pain #1 and 2 is it normal to have it this long. Should I consult a Dr. or will this pass with time? Some times the pain is so severe it is almost crippling. Thank you for your time and hope to hear an answer soon. Thanks again Loralee Perkins.

Answer
Hi Loralee
Sorry I have been a bit late we have been having computer problems, and questions have been late getting through.

Having an epidural should not cause back pain or spasms, sometimes in rare cases you can get a slight ache usually in one leg as well,  Some other causes of back pain you need to rule out Are you still bleeding after the birth? Sometimes this can give you backache, even lifting the baby wrongly can cause back ache to continue longer.  It is possible that you had a forceps delivery with the epidural and this can leave you with a back ache, but I should have thought the back pain would have gone by now.

I would go and see your Doctor and get him to check you out. I hope this helps, but dont leave it too long before you see him.
