Postpartum Wrist Pain: Causes, Relief, and Long-Term Solutions

Question
I have been suffering from wrist pain(in  both the wrists)since pregnancy and after the delivery(3 months back) it has become worse. It hurts when i pick up weight.I told this to my family doctor she asked me to take pain killers whenever i feel the pain and it will persist from 6 months to 1 year. I just don't want to be dependent on painkillers(because of their side effects)...please help

Answer
It sounds like you may be dealing with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or related repetitive stress injury (RSI), which is common in both pregnancy and postpartum.

I do not agree with you doctor that you should medicate and wait it out. In some cases RSI do not resolve and becomes a chronic, debilitating, problem. As a mom, you are constantly using your wrists as you lift and carry, nurse, diaper, etc. And as your baby gains weight and strength, the stress on your wrists will only increase.

Please visit your OBGYN, who should be more helpful regarding postpartum problems, and get a referral to a PT who specializes in pregnancy and RSI.

In the mean time, your could try wearing wrist splints at night while you're sleeping, and during painful episodes to help reduce stress on the joints.
