Post-Miscarriage Period Delay: Causes & What to Expect

Question
I am 36, with one 22 month old daughter.

I had a miscarriage (at 7 weeks) on May 10.  It is now June 20, and I have not gotten my period.  My OB said 4 to 6 weeks, and I just hit 6 weeks.  This is unusual for me.  But then so is a miscarriage (my first).

I am crampy, bloated, sore breasts, and tired.  This could mean period OR pregnacy for me.  I took a pregnancy test several days ago: negative.  I also checked my basal temp. and it was high.  I'm pretty sure all the material is gone, as the amniotic sac passed intact, imbedded in a large clot of tissue.

What do you think?  I am making an appt to see my OB, but this is driving me mad in the meantime.

Thanks so much!  Lisa Wilson

Answer
If you do not get your period by Joly, take a pregnancy test (it may have been too early when you took the test), and if it is negative, have your gynecologist induce your period using Provera 10mg twice a day for 5 days, and you should get your period within 10 days. If your miscarriage was on May 10, the earliest that you could have ovulated would have been 14 days later, or on May 24. If you did conceive around May 24, the earliest that a pregnancy test would show a positive result would be 14-21 days later. The best time to take a test is 21 days after ovulation, or around June 14.  Since the test was negative a few days ago, it is highly unlikely that you have become pegnant. Sometimes, after a miscarriage, it will take 6-8 weeks to get your period. I would give it until until July 5 before doing anything.
