High-Risk Pregnancy at 39: Gestational Diabetes, Fibromyalgia & More

Question
I just found out that I am pregnant.  My last period I believe was May 4th.  During my last pregnancy I had Gestational Diabetes and it appears that I have it with this one.  I just recently got diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, have digenerative disk disease and had back surgery two years ago.  Here is my concern.  I am 39 years old and this was not a planned pregnancy.  I cannot get in to see the OBGYN until July 12th.  According to my last period I should be at least 7 weeks pregnant, but I am certain that I already feel the baby kicking and my belly is now slightly showing.  Is this considered a high risk pregnancy and should I push the nurses and doctor to see me sooner because of my health issues and the fact that I feel this baby moving and I might be farther along than first thought?  Thank You Wendy

Answer
If your last period was correct, you are 6 weeks 5 days pregnant. Aside form the history of gestational diabetes, the other problems that you have will not interfere with the pregnancy and you are not considered to be high risk. There is no way for you to know, yet, whether you will again have gestational diabetes until you take a blood test. It is doubtful that you are far enough along in the pregnancy to feel kicking, since fetal movement does not start until 18-19 weeks gestation (almost five months) Your fist visit should be between 6-10 weeks gestation, so you can certainly wait until July 12 for your visit. HOwever, if you are doubtful as to how far along you are, you can get an appointment for a sonogram and see. By now, a sonogram will show how far along you are and will demonstrate a fetus and a fetal heartbeat. Don't worry. Good lUck to you.
