QuestionQUESTION: I started dating this guy, and we have been sexually active for about a month. My period ended up being a week late, and was very light in relation to how it normally is. It also only lasted a couple days when usually it lasts 3-4 days. While having sex with my boyfriend a couple days later, I experienced a lot of bleeding, and have been bleeding since. I read that sex can't prolong a period, and this occurred after my period should have ended. I also experience random cramping and back pain, and had to use an emergency contraceptive about a month ago. Is it possible that I had a miscarriage?
Another to note: I've been training for a 5k marathon and run vigorously for approx. 30 minutes 3 days a week, and occasionally cross-train.
ANSWER: Your case seems to be little complicated. So I will first have to put the pieces together. So you have been sexually active since a month and took an emergency contraceptive some time back, then you had scanty periods, and after the period, while you were having sex, developed bleeding and you continue to bleed. Is it the sequence of events? correct me if i me wrong.
Now you seem to have the following problems
1. The bleeding is probably due to a trauma to the cervix and you need to undergo a full pelvic examination, and hurry up and show to a doctor, it is very important because if we do not repair it then you will have many problems later on including abortions and pre term labour. I am not sure why you had this tear in the cervix, but this is the probable cause. Although There is a possibility that you could be having periods, but I am not sure of this diagnosis.
2. The abnormal periods can be caused by two factors which you have, firstly you have been training hard, and any hard physical activity can lead to cessation of periods , in fact many women runners do not have periods during periods of training. You also took emergency contraception and it also upsets the hormonal balance causing abnormal periods, although it is known to cause excess bleeding. So in my opinion you had less bleeding due to the training you are undergoing.
But take me seriously and go to the doc for your bleeding as it is important and if you leave it here, can lead to serious complications later on.

QUESTION: I've been sexually active for longer than a while, but only for a month with this specific person. The sexual interaction the night the bleeding started was no different than the other interactions we had. I was a week late for my period, and the period I had was really light and short. I read that the period could actually be "implementation bleeding?" I took the contraceptive about a month ago, which was 3 weeks before I was supposed to have my period.
AnswerI need a little bit more info.
Can you elaborate on the bleeding, How much was it, was it like normal periods, or just spotting. Are you bleeding even now.
Implantation bleeding is usually nothing more than spotting and many women will not even notice it. So i don't think it was implantation bleeding. As far as the reason for the short and light period goes, it is due to the physical stress of all the training. Once you stop hectic physical activity, your periods are likely to stabilize.
There is this article on bleeding which you can read, may be it will help you clear some doubts, but take my advice and see a doctor.
