Fibroids vs. Pregnancy: Understanding Early Symptoms & Ultrasound Findings

Question
my last menstrual period was June 3.  I am now about 5 1/2 weeks pregnant.  I had positive hcg levels.  I had an ultrasound done.  They said that they didn't see anything yet, although there was a spot that looked like a fibroid.  Could this actually be the sac?  Is it too early? They also said that i had thickening in the uterus, that they said was good.

I am bleeding and having cramping and a lot of abdominal pressure.  Hcg levels still high.

My questions are:

would your uterus thicken even if there isn't a uterine pregnancy?

Could this fibroid that they saw be actually the pregnancy?

Thank you so much for your help

Answer
If your last period started on Jun 3, you are now only 5 weeks 2 days into your pregnancy. Until you reach 6 weeks, a sonogram will not see a fetus but may see an empty gestational sac or a thickened endometrium (which is necessary for preganancy) If you have elevated HCG values, you are definitely pregnant. A fiborid does not look like an embryo and, if it is small, it will not interfere with the pregnancy. I would repeat the sonogram in another week. If you continue bleeding and cramping, you may be starting to have a miscarriage. You can tell if you are having a miscarriage if you take two blood tests for pregnancy (Beta HCG) 48 hours apart. If there is a doubling of the results in 48 hours, it is a normal pregnancy. If there is a halving of the results in 48 hours, it is a miscarriage.
