Low Progesterone in Early Pregnancy: What You Need to Know
QuestionI am very newly pregnant. I have a 4 and 2 year-old - both were great pregnancies. I had my first miscarriage in Jan 2007. Because of the miscarriage, my ob asked that I have blood work done as soon as I am pregnant again. I am only 4.5 weeks, but they said my progesterone is at 17. They would like to put me on an oral supplement. They said I'm borderline too low...my question is whether or not the supplement is necessary. I go again for blood work in 5 days. I don't want to take anything that is not necessary. If I should take it...are there any possible negative side effects to the baby?
AnswerDear Melissa,
Many doctors prescribe a progesterone supplement to boost the progesterone levels if they are a bit low. Progesterone is a naturally occurring hormone during pregnancy and is necessary to maintain the pregnancy. One of its main functions is to keep the lining of the uterus thick, which is necessary for a successful pregnancy. It also creates a nutrient rich environment for the baby by increasing glycogen and arterial blood to the lining of the uterus, keeps the uterus from having contractions, and causes the cervix to thicken and create a mucous plug which prevents bacteria from entering the uterus.
I would not say there are necessarily any "negative" effects to your baby as long as you follow your doctor's orders. If your doctor feels that this is necessary to sustain the pregnancy, then I personally would not be afraid to take it at all.
I hope this information has helped you and answered your question. I wish you well.
