Uterine Fibroids and Fertility: Balancing Treatment & Conception
QuestionI am 35 year ago and no children. My husband and I are trying to start a family. Just recently, we discovered that I have uterine fibroid. 12cm Large. I want to preserve my ability to get pregnant.
1. Should I take care the fibroid issue first or should I go ahead try to concieve first? I do have heavy period right now.
2. I heard about lupron which can shrink the fibroid. But the fibroid can also regrow after the stopping the medication. Should I still try it?
Many thanks.
AnswerIf you have such a large fibroid (12cm) it can prevent implantation of the fetus, or it can prevent growth of the fetus or delivery of the baby (if it obstructs the outlet of the uterus). The fibroid should probably be removed (myomectomy) and then you can become pregnant and deliver the baby. The fibroid will usually grow back. Lupron is used in order to shrink a fibroid in order to allow for a hysterectomy. I think you should discuss the surgery with your doctor to see if it(the myomectomy) is conceivable.
