QuestionI have a 7cm subserosal fibroid and my OB/GYN wants to perform a myomectomy. My first goal is to preserve my fertility (I've had no children yet), and I am worried about the possibilities of complications which would result in an emergency hysterectomy. My doctor also said that laproscopy is not as precise to close the incision to my uterus as effectively. My questions are:
How often are there complications resulting in hysterectomy?
Is this true about laproscopy, or is it just easier and less time-consuming for them to make an abdominal incision?
Thanks,
Laura
AnswerHi Laura,
Well, first of all, the fibroid needs to be removed because it is large, and it could also cause infertility. Fibroids can be removed both ways, however, if your doctor feels that opening you up is the better option, than I don't think he is doing it to save time. Laparoscopy may not be an option because of the size of the fibroid, the composition of the fibroid, or the location of the fibroid. I think that the risk of an emergency hysterectomy is very small and that if you didn't have the surgery, you would have a hard time conceiving. Also, if you were able to conceive, having a fibroid of that size can cause miscarriage or pre-term labor. I hope this helps. Good luck!
