Irregular Periods & Abdominal Pain: Possible Endometriosis?

Question
My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant now for approximately 6.5-7 months.  I had quit using the pill about that time ago and my periods have been extremely irregular ever since.  I am a marthon runner, and around September or so, I started developing SEVERE abdominal cramping that mainly came on after I had ran.  Then whenever I would take a step on my right leg, I would get a sharp pain in the right side of my abdomen.  I am not asking you to diagnose me, but can pelvic pain in endometriosis...feel like severe abdominal cramps?  I just recently spoke with a friend who said she has endometriosis.  I asked how she found out and she said he had had severe pelvic pain was her first symptom.  Is there any way a woman with endometriosis can get pregnant, or are the chances somewhat slim?  Thank you in advance!

Answer
As a matter of fact, pregnancy will cure endometriosis. There are many reasons for muscle or abdominal pain, especially in marathon runners.  Although endometriosis can present with pain anywhere in the abdomen, it is usually seen below the fundus of the uterus upon examination by the gynecologist.  You may merely have strained a muscle that is radiating to the abdomen. If the pain persists, it certainly warrants a visit to the gynecologist as well as a sonogram to see if anything is happening in your abdomen. The only way to definitively diagnose endometriosis is by laparoscopy and actually visualizing the lesions.
