Barrel Racing & Pregnancy: Safety & Considerations

Question
I am 25.  O children (first pregnancy).  Last cycle Dec. 1.  I was wondering what your thoughts on barrel racing competition during pregnancy were.  I am more comfortable on my horses then most are in their vehicles.  My obgyn has adviced me not to compete, while others in her practice have told friends of mine it was safe until you felt uncomfortable with your expanding belly.  I hoped to compete until at least 15 weeks.  Can you shed some light for me.  Thanks

Answer
There is no harm to the pregnancy or to you or the fetus while riding, but there certainly is an increased risk in competition sports like barrel racing. There is a risk of injury if you fall or are bumped even if you are an excellent rider. Of course, when you get to 20 weeks gestation, you will no longer have a waist and that may cause some problems on its own. Remember, you ride at your own risk, but you have to protect your fetus as well.
